Student Alpha in a Suitcase

Hannah Gibney 02-02-2012

We all know how intimidating it can be to even THINK about running any kind of course for your friends, let alone one that delves into the BIG questions. Here at Student Alpha Towers we love to make it as easy as possible for you to do so! So here are our top ten tips for running Student Alpha:

Go on....Just give it a try....

1. Choose your size

Student Alpha can be run BIG (in a Student’s Union, as part of a mission week, in a church or pub...to name a few examples) or SMALL (in your lounge, kitchen, common room...). There’s no need to think that just because you can’t fill a massive room with lots of people that Student Alpha isn’t for you. All of the talks can be done live, or be shown on your laptop or TV (with the new DVD) so don’t let numbers define your parameters!

2. Follow the recipe

The successful ingredients for any Alpha course are Fellowship (including FOOD – obviously!), the Talk and Small Group time. If you have each of these components in your course it’s bound to be a success! (Also if you’re worried about the food part check out our recipe ideas... )

3. Spice it up a bit

If you decide that you would like to run Student Alpha BIG then remember to use our multimedia resources known as ‘Prezis’. They are extremely easy to use and compliment a live talk. There are also awesome animations and vox pops that can help you out in any setting to make everything a bit more interactive! Click on the words to go straight to the relevant pages on the website.

4. The heart of Student Alpha

The small group is at the heart of Student Alpha. The best way to think about this is that you are hosting a group of your closest friends for dinner (which you may well be doing anyway!). Get to know your guests and make the environment comfortable. You are there to help facilitate the conversation and remember that no question is EVER stupid.

5. Having the A team

Make sure that you choose your very own A Team. Having a strong and committed group around you will make all the difference! Make sure that (once you’ve registered your course) you go through the training materials available online with your team. We promise it’ll make everyone feel more confident in leading and make everything much more relaxing!

6. Money matters

We all know that money can be a worry. Running a Student Alpha course doesn’t have to break the bank. Perhaps be creative about how you source food, like asking members of your church to sponsor the food costs – or perhaps make one dish over the course? If you need any more ideas please do get in touch with us.

Have fun!

7. A little bit of prayer goes a long way

Remember to cover your course in prayer. It really does help to solidify everything. Promise.

8. Register your course

Please do remember to register your course! Not only will you have access to our wonderful training materials but we will know you’re out there and be able to support you in prayer. It’s also a huge encouragement for us to see how many people are running Student Alpha. Go on. You know you want to. (just click here)
