The Adjustment Bureau. A Christian message....?
Oh how I love my cinema card. Unlimited cinema access for only £13 a month. Good times....!
With this in mind, I took a leisurely Sunday afternoon trip to the cinema to see The Adjustment Bureau, which was an absolute winner. Starring Matt Damon and that stroppy British PA from The Devil Wears Prada. It was like Inception meets The Matrix meets Bruce Almighty....a strange combination perhaps?
I left wondering whether or not there was a Christian message in there though. There were Angel like characters who called themselves ‘case workers’, and there was someone referred to as ‘The Big Man Upstairs’ and ‘The Chairman’. It was a pretty interesting storyline about fate versus free will – the tag line for the film being ‘Fight for your fate’.
Now I don’t want to give too much more away, but it got me thinking about Hollywood films with Christian messages in them, and there seem to be more and more. From the pretty obvious Bruce Almighty, Narnia films and Evan Almighty, to the slightly more subtle Messiah allegory in Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino. There are others too, like last year’s The Book of Eli or the slightly older Dogma.
I’m not sure if the Christian message is completely accurate in some of these movies, but at least it gets the questions going and the final line in the Adjustment Bureau is certainly a conversation starter.... ... Why not show a movie with a Christian undertone as a Student Alpha launch party? Any other great film suggestions, then send them our way: studentalpha@alpha.org
